Frequently Asked Questions
How can I find out my ring size?
+
The most accurate way to get your finger measured is to pop into our studio or visit your local
jeweller and use a jeweller’s ring sizer. Of course, this isn't always possible or convenient so here
is our handy guide to size your fingers at home.
What if I need my ring re-sized?
+
If you purchased a ring that is one of our “Standard Pieces” either online or in-store and find you need a slightly different size please return it unworn in the original packaging within 14 days and we will happily exchange it for another size. If you need a ”Customised Piece” or your well loved AuTerra rings re-sized the cost will be dependant on the particular design and the size difference. Please send us an email and we will be able to quote you accordingly.
You will be responsible for all shipping costs; please see our Delivery and Returns page for more information.
How long will it take for my parcel to arrive?
+
Most of our designs are made to order specially for you which takes approximately ten to fifteen working days (the specific lead times are listed on each product).
Shipping takes 2-3 working days for local orders and 5-10 days for international deliveries.
I need my order urgently. Will you be able to get it to me sooner?
+
We will do our very best to help you out wherever humanly possible.
Please contact us as soon as possible before making your purchase.
How is my order packaged?
+
All our pieces come packaged in a branded linen drawstring bag with care instructions and a little write-up about our Fairmined metals,
making them a perfect little spoil for yourself or a thoughtful gift.
The hemp bag is enclosed in a small, sturdy shipping box to ensure that your jewellery arrives in perfect condition.
Can I return my order?
+
It is very important to us that you are in love with your jewellery. We offer returns and exchanges for local customers on all of our “Standard Pieces” within 14 days of delivery. We can’t facilitate any returns or exchanges on “Customised Pieces”, these include one-of-a-kind pieces, wedding and engagement rings or any pieces that have been customised for you, please make sure you are completely happy with your order before placing it. Please note we cannot offer returns on international orders. You can read more about our returns policy here Delivery and Returns.
Can you repair my AuTerra jewellery?
+
All our pieces are made using the highest quality materials and are designed to last a lifetime, but as with all delicate treasures, they can occasionally break. If the damage is the result of a manufacturing fault, we will repair it for free within the first 30 days; all other repairs will be charged by the hour. Please let us know the extent of the damage and we will quote you on the work required. Please note we don’t offer a repair service on any pieces non AuTerra pieces.
Is it safe to ship jewellery from South Africa?
+
Our international delivery is done via Fedex, fully tracked and traced. As a very reputable organisation,
Fedex has many checks and balances in place to ensure the safe delivery of your parcel.
Shipping jewellery from South Africa does not, in our experience, carry with it any more risks than jewellery deliveries anywhere else in the world.
Will there be a customs charge on my international parcel?
+
The world is a big and complicated place so there may well be a customs charge on your parcel.
As we are unable to advise what these fees might be,
we recommend you contact your country's customs office or tax agent for respective charges and rates on a package coming from outside your country.
You will be responsible for all applicable customs, duties, taxes and fees charged by your government.
Help, I think my package may be lost.
+
Oh oh! Just kidding. We’re here to help every step of the way! Drop us a mail and we’ll help you track it down.
This is a gift for someone special. Can I ship it to them directly?
+
Yes! Just make sure to make a note of this at checkout along with their name and delivery information. If you would like us to include a handwritten message from you please include this as well.
This option is better suited for local orders as international deliveries require an invoice (don’t worry,
we won’t include an invoice in local gift parcels) and in some countries the recipient is required to pay the customs charges directly to the courier upon delivery
Do you offer gift cards?
+
Yes we do. You'll find them under 'SHOP' in our menu.
What are AuTerra one-of-a-kind pieces?
+
Our one-of-a-kind pieces feature specifically sourced, unique stones and distinctive designs to create truly exclusive jewellery. Once sold, these pieces are no longer available, as only one of each exists. However, we may make similar pieces in the future as well as continually adding new designs to the one-of the-kind collection so it’s worth keeping an eye on out website. One-of-a-kind pieces are ready to ship in a day or two (unless ring resizing is required).
Do you do custom made pieces?
+
Working with such specially sourced materials means that we produce many of our pieces in batches. This type of workflow is not conducive to creating custom designs.
What we do offer however are customisations of many of our designs. These customisations include adding engraving, changing the number of stones, creating the piece in a different kart or gold colour etc. The customisations that are possible are heavily dependent on the particulars of the design you are interested in. To discuss creating your dream version please drop us an email info@auterra.co.za.
Please note: pieces with customisations cannot be returned or exchanged. You can read more about our returns Ts and Cs here.
What materials is your jewellery made from?
+
All silver pieces are jewellery grade sterling silver. Sterling silver, the most common type of silver for jewellery, is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. This small amount of copper is what makes the silver sufficiently hard to withstand daily wear.
Our standard 9 karat gold is a wonderful alloy providing incredible durability and an accessible price point. 9 karat gold is comprised of 37.5% pure gold with the balance being made up by silver and copper. Again, it is this mix that gives it its long-lasting properties.
We do also offer 14 and 18 karat gold on request.
Why do you work in Fairmined gold and silver rather than recycled metals?
+
The term ‘recycled’ in the precious metals industry is not a straightforward one, its ranges from everything to true end-of-life items like broken electronics to the melting down of completely untraceable jewellery (i.e potentially stolen) and a lot of murky middle ground in between these two.
Additionally using recycled gold does not prevent gold mining, as the demand for gold is still rising. The Fairmined certification of our gold and silver provides a guarantee that the metals have been extracted in harmony with nature, human dignity and sustainable development, contributing the transformation of the lives of people in mining communities. Read more about Fairmined here.
Is your jewellery nickel free?
+
Yes! All our jewellery is nickel free and suitable for those of you with allergies.
Do your items come with a warranty?
+
Yes! All our jewellery comes with a one month warranty on any issues related to its manufacturing.
Repairs and restorations required after this date are considered a result of general wear and tear or mishandling and are therefore not covered by warranty.
Please let us know the extent of the damage and we will quote you on the work required to restore your piece to its former glory.
Do AuTerra pieces have a hallmark?
+
Ninety percent of our pieces contain hallmarkings, these include the metal karatage, our AuTerra logo and the Fairmined Logo. The remaining ten percent of our pieces are just to small and delicate to accommodate these engravings, but they are of no lesser quality and are still crafted in Fairmined certified metals. As per South African jewellery practices we apply the hallmarking in house.
Can I have my jewellery engraved.
+
Yes, we offer both laser and hand engraving as an add on service and it is wonderful way to personalise your AuTerra piece. Please get in touch to discuss if your selected piece is suited to engraving and for a quote. You can view our engraving fonts and information here. Please note: engraved pieces cannot be exchanged or refunded.
Do you provide valuation certificates with your pieces?
+
We can provide in-house valuation certificates for any piece over R10 000 for insurance purposes, please contact us before you collect your piece to arrange this. Independent valuations and appraisals (conducted by The Gem lab) can be arranged by special request for a fee of R750. The Gem lab valuations will add a week’s lead time onto your order and must be requested at the time of placing your order.
